I tried the arp command but it didn't work. My Digi 3400x came set w/o an IP but with DHCP enabled.
When I printed the fact sheet per the instructions the reported IP was noted as being set by the
server. When I checked the IP was in the address range I had established in the SMC. Note: the arp
command said it set the fixed IP I wanted using the print server's MAC but it didn't take. The DHCP
address did. So I telneted in on the DHCP address. It worked but I didn't find that satisfactory so I
went back to DHCP. (see below)

As am I. Everything is fixed except my WinNT box (I have less problems with NT with it on DHCP) and
an experimental Digi 3400x setup. The Digi 3400x is back under DHCP at least for a while. I'm
experimenting with it to see what happens when the DHCP IP lease runs out. If the SMC keeps re-serving
the same IP all is well. If it does not then I'll switch the SMC 7004BR with an SMC 7004ABR (which I
bought because the $50 rebate made it the lowest cost ($49) print server and hub for our Macintosh
that could be had) and try its DHCP function. The ABR has an unlimited time IP lease setting that the
BR doesn't have. If this works it will beat the arp/telnet bit that I don't know much about and find
"tricky".

I have had no problems with the SMC so if the SMC DHCP/Digi 3400x/NC20 experiment works out (even if I
have to go to the ABR as my cable modem/firewall/print server box) I'll be going to DHCP for all my
machines. Then the only fixed IPs on the LAN will be the two SMCs themselves (there will be no DHCP
server to serve them).

Sheridan
