There's a \DMISL\ directory which contains the file sldb.dmi.

sldb.dmi won't xcopy, copy or zip. I can't figure out how to back it up
unless I boot from a different partition.

What is the purpose of the DMISL directory, its .mfi files and its
sldb.dmi database? (The dmisl.msg file is readable using epm.)

The syslevel.dmi file just says it's the "IBM OS/2 DMTF Service Layer".

Is this directory "critical"? If I have to restore from a backup and
sldb.dmi isn't restored, do I lose something or is it just an "info"
file?

The online info for DMISL is pretty sparse -- you can "Search -> All
Libraries" for DMTF and get a bit of info but nothing fully explanatory.
