I was told recently that the solid-state KVM switches emulate
absent PS/2-style hardware. While a machine may operate with a
serial mouse dis-connected, even temporary absence of a PS/2
mouse can cause a problem (crash). And I've noticed this idiosyncracy
with one of my machines, but not tested it. I no longer change mice
while booted up. Since my second monitor died I've been looking
longingly at KVM switches. Cheaper than a new 19" monitor.

At a previous job they tried everything and settled on KVM. And they're
a cheap outfit -- they would have used whatever was cheapest, if it worked.
