Is there any way of tracing a system hang during bootup (which my system
occasionally does)? I get the blue-green desktop with nothing there but
the mouse pointer as a clock. Everything is locked up (no response to
anything). I cannot even turn off the computer at the ON/OFF switch on
the CPU tower. Instead, I have to cycle the power at the power strip.
When I cycle the power, the system does not go through CHKDSK.EXE on any
partitions. Apparently, the hang stops short of OS/2 openning up the
hard drives for use.

I have unsuccessfully tried several things to correct the problem. I
placed everything I could (launchpad, WarpCenter, etc.) in the startup
folder instead of in the CONFIG.SYS autostart. I changed the video
driver (from Matrox to SciTech). I replaced my audio card with a spare
one of the same brand. I tried using a Promise Ultra100 IDE card instead
of the onboard motherboard IDE interface (I am back to the onboard IDE).

The hang frequency and severity change over time. Sometimes I can go
several days with no hang. Right after that it will hang and I can
simply reboot. My system comes right back. Sometimes, however, I have to
reboot several times or change something the system (replace the
OS2*.INI files with previously saved versions or turn off IDE
busmastering).

I get the fewest hangs over a period of time, when I turn off
busmastering. However, I can sometimes sucessfully boot with
busmastering on. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to boot up for
several days with IDE busmastering enabled. I simply pressed the SHIFT
and CONTROL keys together all during the bootup. If, I failed to do
that, it hung. That worked, however, only for about a week. When it
stopped working, I had to disable busmastering to get the system back.

Does anyone have any ideas how to trace this problem? I really would
like to get it fixed.
