Ok, progress.  
 
I don't see anything about "printer specific format" or "background  
printing" in either PROPERTIES or OPTIONS in the printer dialog box.  
However, if I say to print only pages 1 to 4, it works fine. If I say to  
print all pages (22), it freezes, and I have to do a ctrl-alt-del.  
 
There are some check boxes I could try that say: Large Buffers, and Use  
Printer Settings. Should I play with those?
